The Las Vegas Wranglers® (34-30-8, 76 Points) were defeated by the Ontario Reign (31-31-10, 72 Points) 7-1 in front of 5,394 fans Saturday night at the Orleans Arena.
With several key players getting a day off in preparation for the playoffs the Las Vegas Wranglers failed to muster much offense as Justin Bernhardt tallied the lone Wranglers goal midway through the 3rd period. Seven different Reign players scored goals in the victory to conclude their season with a .500 record one year after winning the Pacific Division. Mike Zacharias stopped 27 of 28 Wranglers shots for the win while Joel Gistedt made 28 saves in the loss.
The first period was controlled by the Ontario Reign and Colin Teubert got the scoring started as his shot trickled through the legs of Joel Gistedt for the 1-0 lead. Just under five minutes later, Geoff Walker’s slap shot off an offensive zone faceoff pushed the lead to 2-0. Greg Hogeboom scored with under two minutes remaining to provide the intermission score of 3-0.
In the second period, with Ontario enjoying a power play, Mike Egener’s slap shot from the blue line made the score 4-0. That score would stand at the break.
In the third period CJ Stretch scored his first goal on a two on one breakaway to make it 5-0 midway through. At the 12:19 mark Justin Bernhardt got the Wranglers on the board as his slap shot from the left circle beat Mike Zacharias to make it 5-1. That was as close as the Wranglers would get. Jordan Nolan would score his first goal on a breakaway with under 4 minutes remaining and Chad Starling would poke home a rebound just over 2 minutes later to provide the final margin.
